Daniel Alvarez-Gavela

Bio

Daniel Alvarez-Gavela joined the Department of Mathematics at MIT as an Assistant Professor in 2022. He completed a PhD in mathematics from Stanford University in 2018. Before joining the MIT faculty, he completed postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University and MIT. In 2019 he received the Vicent Caselles Mathematics Research Prize. His research is in the field of symplectic and contact topology, with a particular focus on the flexibility of caustics (aka singularities of wavefronts) and its applications, as well as on the interactions between algebraic K-theory and symplectic and contact topology.
