Hung Cheng has been Professor of Applied Mathematics in the theoretical physics group since 1970. He received the B.Sc and the Ph.D. degrees from Caltech in 1959 and 61. He had postdoctorate research appointments at Caltech, Princeton and Harvard before joining the MIT faculty in applied mathematics in 1965. In 1978, Professor Cheng was elected Academician of Academia Sinica. In 2017, Professor Cheng received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Technology and Humanity/Humanities from the Chinese Institute of Engineers, San Francisco Bay Chapter.

In 2016 Professor Cheng published his first novel, "Nanjing Never Cries" (MIT Press, 2016). On September 26, 2016, Cheng gave a reading and talk about his novel, at an event hosted by the School of Science, with the MIT Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and the Chinese Writers' Association in Northern America, New England Chapter.
