Trying to do calculus in characteristic p returns strange results like the Cartier isomorphism: the deRham *cohomology groups* of a smooth F_pvariety looks the same as the deRham complex back again (up to a twist). This turns out to be a prototype for a result in the Hochschild homology of smooth algebras in characteristic p. In this talk I'll explain this background and give new examples of a Cartierlike isomorphism in 'higher chromatic characteristics' (e.g. for connective real Ktheory and connective topological modular forms).
